Summary: Dysphagia may be caused by many underlying medical etiologies, and the hospital-based SLP must navigate a comprehensive world of medical diagnoses and be prepared to accurately evaluate and plan dysphagia treatment. Summary: Selecting and interpreting a CAPD test battery that is appropriate to the individual patient is critical to securing much-needed services and achieving positive outcomes. Many audiologists use a standardized, normative-scored CAPD test battery rather than a test battery driven by specific patient characteristics because they do not know how to appropriately select a comprehensive test battery or because of beliefs that testing cannot be performed for certain populations (e.g., children younger than age 7). This session will discuss tips for putting together patient-driven testing options, including how to administer and score them. Summary: Impairments in laryngeal vestibule closure (LVC) are a major cause of aspiration during swallowing. Accurately identifying LVC impairment is a priority in dysphagia management as aspiration can occur if LVC is absent or delayed, or duration is reduced. However, this mechanism is often overlooked and underreported in the evaluation of swallowing and in swallowing research. This session discusses methods for incorporating LVC as a primary outcome measure in dysphagia diagnosis and management to increase diagnostic accuracy and optimize dysphagia management.
