Summary: Children’s verbal skills differ for many different reasons. Some may have a specific deficit in learning language rules and structures; for others, the differences in expression may result from underlying limitations in memory skills, or in the cognitive control and flexibility needed to plan and monitor communication. Summary: The quality of online medical information can conflict with evidence-based research. Tinnitus is a target for misinformation and bogus treatments due to its prevalence and lack of objective treatments. This presentation discusses a study that assessed how people with and without tinnitus respond to online misinformation regarding tinnitus and determined whether a counseling session regarding causes and management of tinnitus affected susceptibility to misinformation. This course was presented and recorded at the 2019 ASHA Convention.

Summary: School-based SLPs who work with African American children can feel underprepared to properly evaluate their language abilities. This webinar explores variation in narrative practices common within AAE-speaking communities. The presenters discuss widely held beliefs about narrative language and its variation, how these beliefs affect clinical practice, and insights from research into how we can expand our narrative language assessment practices to be more inclusive of culturally based narrative variation.

Summary: Comprehensive management and treatment for children with CAPDs necessitates effective evaluation of co-morbidities and other related factors. Summary: Published research indicates that outcomes in children with hearing loss are generally lower than their hearing counterparts. Given the cascading effects auditory deprivation and language delays may cause in children, providing differential diagnoses can present a challenge. This course identifies commonly occurring comorbid presentations in children with hearing loss and describes the process of making differential diagnoses.

But these children need appropriate intervention to acquire spoken language at their optimal level. This webinar explores six principles of intervention that can effectively facilitate the acquisition of spoken language. Summary: This session introduces a language intervention program for middle and high school students-Philosophy for Adolescents-that is designed to support critical thinking, narrative and expository discourse, and the use of complex syntax and literate vocabulary such as abstract nouns and metacognitive verbs. The speaker discusses and demonstrates intervention using Philosophy for Adolescents through role-playing activities that engage participants as they work through a lesson in pairs or small groups.
