Summary: Children and adults who use cochlear implants and have additional exceptionalities present challenges in diagnostic testing and therapeutic intervention for speech-language pathologists and audiologists. This session reviews current research on communication and quality of life in this population, while also highlighting real-world clinical practices in assessing, treating, and defining success in these patients. Summary: Recent studies from the presenters’ laboratory demonstrate a relationship between electrode-to-modiolus distance and channel independence. Specifically, children and adults who use cochlear implants (CIs) (precurved electrodes) demonstrate performance gains up to 12 and 16 channels. The presenters’ working theory is that greater channel independence affords better spectrotemporal resolution. This presentation describes the relationship between spectrotemporal processing and CI outcomes for adult and pediatric CI users. This course was presented and recorded at the 2019 ASHA Convention. Summary: This session is a clinical tutorial that uses cases examples to integrate the practices of language sample analysis and fluency assessment. It focuses on the implementation of fluency codes in narrative retell language samples. Speakers provide information on how to identify and accurately code specific types of disfluencies within a narrative retell language sample. The tutorial provides clinicians with practical tools to use in particular narrative retell language samples to assess fluency and language production skills in bilingual and monolingual children.
