Summary: SLPs frequently evaluate and provide rehabilitation services to patients with sudden changes in cognitive status. This session will provide a foundation for understanding delirium—one of the most common reasons for acute cognitive change among older adults. As a symptom of other underlying medical issues, delirium frequently goes unrecognized or is misattributed as a mental health or primary neurologic issue, which leads to inaccurate treatment and recovery approaches. This session will help SLPs recognize delirium and improve early detection and treatment for patients in hospitals and nursing home settings.

Summary: Learning to gesture or use aided AAC for intentional communication with a partner is challenging for some infants and toddlers with complex communication needs. This session explores a variety of intervention strategies that improve pre-intentional and intentional communication skills using various AAC modalities and some of which incorporate families and caregivers. Summary: Simulated presence treatment, in which an individual living with dementia watches a video or listens to audio of a familiar person (a family member or doctor), may reduce agitation and confusion and allow the individual to redirect to meaningful activities. This course – which is broken into six 5-minute blocks – will guide SLPs through using this tool to help their clients with dementia. The presenter will share examples of the tool and then walk you through creating simulated presence videos using simple technology for your own clients with dementia, including giving you time to practice and reflect.
