Summary: Audiologists help to diagnose or rule out vestibular disorders and make recommendations for referrals and treatment. As part of treatment, quality of life must be discussed. This presentation discusses the current diagnostic criteria used for vestibular migraine, symptoms, assessment protocols, and treatment options. The speaker reviews the relationship between vertiginous migraines and Meniere's disease and addresses considerations for pediatric patients.

Summary: Older adults must make important decisions about their end-of-life care, and those with hearing and other communication disorders need special accommodations to participate in these important decisions to the fullest extent possible. This session discusses the communication needs of patients in the final stages of life, including the use of various hearing technologies, such as hearing aids, personal sound amplifiers, and pocket talkers. The presenters discuss tools to facilitate conversations among patients, family members, and caregivers.

Summary: Streamed audio has grown from a technological novelty into a distinct listening environment for hearing aid users. This presents a unique listening environment that can prove difficult to verify, as streamed audio is not an external stimulus and cannot be verified using conventional methods. This session describes a new and accessible verification method aimed at the streamed audio environment, ensuring that hearing aid users receive optimal benefit in their digital soundscape.

Summary: This presentation describes the case of a 48-year-old female presenting with vertigo and disequilibrium consistent with mal de debarquement (MdDS) following a weeklong vacation cruise. MRI images, audiometric, and vestibular results are presented, as well as an in-depth review of MdDS and Chiari malformation and their impact on vestibular function and quality of life.

Summary: This course explores factors that contribute to health inequities for individuals who report a hearing loss. Individuals with hearing loss report miscommunication, inaccessible health information, reduced awareness by health care providers, and low patient satisfaction while struggling with inadequate health literacy. The course discusses ideas for rethinking and redesigning our health care, through the guidance of innovative clinics and programs, to address these inequities and care for these individuals effectively.

Summary: This presentation describes the evidence and future directions for research, practice, and policy to address factors that contribute to disparities in care between minority and non-minority patients. A growing body of evidence demonstrates that persons living with all types of communication disabilities experience disparities in the receipt of high-quality health care services.

Summary: Prior to 2020, a remote model of hearing health care had been applied primarily to remote populations and/or limited to hearing screening and counseling services. Now, in the face of a global pandemic that makes face-to-face services risky, there has been an urgent demand for more information about teleaudiology. This session will review the evolution of teleaudiology, including provider and patient attitudes concerning the perceived benefits, disadvantages, and outcomes associated with remote audiologic care. The speaker will describe an existing, commercial, patient-centered teleaudiology model of hearing health care that is designed to increase accessibility and reduce cost while maintaining the audiologist’s central role as a critical component of care throughout the patient journey.

Summary: The global COVID-19 pandemic has introduced a level of disruption into our personal and professional lives that was previously unimaginable. How we respond will be a deciding factor for the future success of our practices. Summary: Cochlear implant technology has evolved over time to include sophisticated features such as accessory-based and direct streaming, remote control devices and apps, bimodal compatibility, and more – and hearing health providers must become proficient with it all. This session explores working with and efficiently troubleshooting these modern and increasingly common systems, such as remote microphones, DM/FM systems, and mobile devices to improve patient outcomes and increase clinic efficiency. Summary: As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, access to our patients for in-person treatment may be limited and our ability to develop a relationship with patients/caregivers may have taken a toll due to facility protocols to protect against the spread of infection. As health care providers, we must reflect on our abilities to communicate with patients and their families, ensuring understanding of their deficits and treatment options even as we continue through a pandemic.
