Summary: This course explores considerations, recommendations, strategies, and resources to support school-based SLPs as they navigate the challenges of hybrid and remote instructional models, which many SLPs are now using due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Presenters will discuss practical strategies for conducting assessments in person and via telepractice, recommended language to use within reports and associated documentation, and ideas for increasing student engagement in virtual settings. Summary: This course includes four recorded sessions from the 2017 online conference “Dysphagia in Older Adults.” These sessions include points to keep in mind when counseling older adults with dysphagia and their families or caregivers about nutrition, diet, and other topics. The conference included a total of 13 sessions, with the broad goal of giving clinicians new, evidence-based strategies for improving overall quality of life for older adults.

Summary: The SLP scope of practice has expanded in recent years to include literacy; however, it can be difficult for school SLPs to carve out their role within the school literacy team. This course focuses on the relationship between the school SLP, reading specialist, and/or special education teacher and how SLPs can cultivate that relationship to provide unified interventions that promote school-wide student success. The speaker shares examples of how school-based SLPs have successfully integrated into the school literacy framework.

Summary: This SIG 1 Perspectives activity focuses on how to work with students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and their caregivers via telepractice. The first article provides five practical tips for supporting families of children with ASD while implementing effective interventions via various telepractice modalities. The second article reviews the feasibility of implementing telehealth programs related to behavioral interventions for families and their children with ASD. The third article explores the usability of a web-based application of the JASPER social communication intervention. The fourth article discusses the results of a survey completed by speech-language pathologists who utilized telepractice to teach children with autism to access and use augmentative and alternative communication devices. The final article shares current available research related to the barriers of and solutions to conducting telehealth assessment and interventions for families and their students with ASD.

Summary: This course describes the various ways that a head and neck cancer diagnosis can impact mental health, and ways to identify when a patient may need to seek professional help from a mental health specialist. The speaker highlights how a speech-language pathologist can assist in the detection of a potential mental health disorder through use of mental health screenings and head-and-neck-specific quality-of-life measures, and discusses considerations for addressing mental health and effectively navigating challenges that may impede success during treatment and/or rehabilitation.
