Summary: In this course, enter into a conversation between an SLP and an individual living with dementia about the experience of being on both sides of the provision of speech services. Since individuals living with communication disorders are the true experts, this session will allow firsthand insight into effective interventions, challenges in navigating the medical system, and compensatory strategies that have supported self-advocacy. Summary: Patients with airway compromise or diseases that affect the respiratory system may have trouble with voicing, swallowing, reflux, mobility, and other functions that have a basis in underlying pressure in the body. This session will examine the human body as a pressurized system, including the interrelationship between functions and pressures; how various disease, anatomical, and physiological changes may impact pressure and functions; and intervention considerations.

Summary: This session describes predictors of hearing aid use time for adolescents who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) as well as activities that target self-advocacy in this population. Summary: Geriatric care provides both unique opportunities and challenges for speech-language pathologists. SLPs working in geriatric settings often face ethical dilemmas associated with various aspects of clinical care, including the decision-making process, patient preferences and respecting patient rights, care planning, end-of-life situations, provision of services, and other issues. This panel discussion addresses the issues faced by SLPs in their daily practice and shares knowledge and resources to address these challenges.

Summary: This session explores functional interventions to maximize developmental feeding skills and swallowing safety in children from birth to 3 years old with a history of cleft lip, cleft palate, and/or craniofacial differences. This session presents effective and evidence-based strategies to improve children's abilities to envision and execute goal-directed and future-focused actions. The presenter discusses strategies to strengthen future-oriented reasoning and emotional regulation during gratification postponement so students can effectively predict performance challenges, anticipate glitches, and handle mistakes while keeping in mind their future needs.
