Summary: Published research indicates that outcomes in children with hearing loss are generally lower than their hearing counterparts. Given the cascading effects auditory deprivation and language delays may cause in children, providing differential diagnoses can present a challenge. This course identifies commonly occurring comorbid presentations in children with hearing loss and describes the process of making differential diagnoses.

Summary: Language assessment in children who are deaf or hard of hearing often focuses on language outcomes without a precise characterization of the child's language learning history. Speech-language pathologists and other early interventionists need support in ensuring that the child's cumulative experience with linguistic input (or lack thereof) is also captured. Summary: Written expression is one of the four major modalities (along with listening comprehension, spoken expression, and reading decoding and comprehension) that SLPs need to assess when identifying language and literacy disorders among school-age children and adolescents. This session shares a framework for analyzing the variety of tasks used for written language assessment on standardized tests and considers pros and cons of each to inform decisions regarding eligibility and dismissal. The session includes opportunities to practice applying a multilevel language analysis system to written language samples of students with varied profiles.
