Summary: Early childhood is a critical period for auditory, language, and cognitive development, and early identification of permanent hearing loss provides the opportunity for children to receive appropriate and timely intervention and educational services. When children are identified late, they are at increased risk of permanent speech, language, and educational delays. Summary: The field of audiology focuses mostly on the peripheral auditory system-in both diagnosis and management-but other factors (e.g., "hidden hearing loss" and/or reduced cognitive ability) may play a role in an individual's ability to communicate in diverse environments. This session discusses how audiologists can incorporate evoked potential testing into the assessment battery to obtain a more comprehensive picture of auditory function.
