Summary: This course examines The PLAY Project®, an evidence-based home intervention and consultation program for young children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The program uses developmentally appropriate, play-based methods and coaches parents and other caregivers to extend treatment beyond the therapy sessions. The presenter explores the program’s main assessment and intervention principles, highlighting specific techniques and activities. The course also presents multiple case studies as useful examples of children's progress in treatment, the practical challenges of implementing a program, overcoming funding obstacles, and the importance of multicultural awareness in ASD intervention, including the adoption of the model for Ohio’s Part C Early Intervention System and a project that implemented the program with a low-income, underserved population in the Caribbean island country Saint Kitts and Nevis.

Summary: Do you wonder why you have children on your caseload who have had the same speech sound production errors for years? Do you wonder what you can do to help the 5th grader who continues to have trouble with the /r/ sound? Do you wonder what happens to these children after they are off your caseload? This webinar will discuss these and other questions that the presenter herself had as a practicing school-based SLP and that she now attempts to solve as a researcher. In this webinar, she will explore the factors that influence language, literacy, and cognitive skills for children with early, persistent, and remediated speech sound disorders. Discussion will include how SLPs can help these children more quickly as well as assessment considerations for ensuring the best outcomes from intervention.

Summary: Clinicians frequently find that children with speech sound disorders progress in intervention more slowly than desired, or they may make expected progress within sessions but not carry over or generalize improved speech skills to their daily activities. There is some evidence that using normalized speech sound intervention – treatment activities that reflect the real-world activities and interactions in which children communicate – can lead to more rapid increases in intelligibility. This course will provide participants with the knowledge and skills to implement normalized speech sound intervention using age and developmentally appropriate curriculum-based learning activities in which the production of speech sound targets is integrated in meaningful verbal and social interactions.

Summary: This video course presents systematic, evidence-based strategies for carrying out a comprehensive evaluation of infants and children who demonstrate signs of dysphagia and/or broader feeding problems. The course includes detailed discussion and strategies for collecting a child’s relevant history and conducting a physical examination and feeding observation. With a focus on function, the course offers guidance on interpreting evaluation findings and making optimal recommendations for next steps that promote functional outcomes. Video clips of professionals and caregivers working with infants and children, as well as discussion of case studies, enhance the learning experience.

Summary: The need for community-viable, evidence-based intervention strategies for toddlers with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a national priority as earlier diagnosis becomes more common. This webinar will present strategies for taking evidence-based research and applying it to practice. Using video examples, the presenters will discuss the findings from the randomized controlled trial of the Early Social Interaction Project (ESI), which teaches parents how to embed evidence-based intervention strategies and supports in everyday activities in natural environments to promote their child’s active engagement. The webinar will also illustrate strategies for utilizing the Autism Navigator, a collection of web-based courses and tools using extensive video footage, for parents, professionals, and others with the goal of improving outcomes for young children with ASD.

Summary: Young children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) are at risk for difficulties in phonological awareness, which impedes their early reading skills. Incorporating phonological awareness into speech treatment for children with CAS can improve their motor speech as well as early literacy skills. This session discusses the use of dynamic tactile temporal cueing (DTTC) to achieve the correct sequencing of articulatory gestures and explore how to incorporate phonics and phonological awareness instruction for pre-practice and correction of speech sound errors. This holistic approach allows the child to achieve better speech intelligibility while receiving explicit instruction to support a foundation for early reading skills. Summary: Effectively assessing preschool children with emotional and behavioral difficulties can be challenging for SLPs. Typical testing protocols do not always work well with this population, meaning many preschool children with behavioral and emotional needs are not appropriately identified in order to receive much-needed speech-language and other services. This webinar illustrates how to use the evidence-based SCERTS framework in assessment as well as intervention planning and delivery to support social communication and relationship development. The webinar focuses on children at three different developmental levels – before using words, emerging language, and conversational.
