Summary: Central auditory processing disorders (CAPDs) can be confusing and challenging for audiologists and speech-language pathologists alike. This session will explain the theory behind CAPDs, clarify the definition, outline some of the controversial aspects, and offer practical strategies for diagnosis and intervention. This course is a recorded session from the 2018/2019 online conference “Central Auditory Processing Disorders (CAPD).”
Presenter(s): Kathryn Hardin, PhD, CCC-SLP, CBIST

Summary: This session discusses the current SLP practice recommendations when it comes to assessment and intervention for concussion/mild TBI, including how SLPs can integrate into interdisciplinary care models. The speaker also discusses considerations related to hearing and auditory processing after mild TBI. This course is a recorded session from the 2020 online conference “Maximizing Functional Outcomes for Individuals With Traumatic Brain Injuries.”
Presenter(s): Debra Schober-Peterson, PhD, CCC-SLP, BCS-CL; Katharine F. Meyer, Esq.

Summary: Private practice has its own set of unique ethical challenges. Private practitioners need to be aware of a host of potential ethical issues and create policies to ensure that they--and their employees--are making ethical decisions in every part of their practice. This session discusses these considerations.
Presenter(s): Konstantina M. Stankovic, MD, PhD, FACS; Lauren Calandruccio, PhD, CCC-A

Summary: The presenters discuss their work on optical imaging of the inner ear to enable progress in understanding, diagnosing, and treating human sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). Next, they illustrate their approach to develop personalized therapies for SNHL, using vestibular schwannoma as an example. Finally, they demonstrate the promise of gene therapy, nanotechnology, and computational drug repositioning. This course was presented and recorded at the 2019 ASHA Convention.

Summary: This session illustrates how telehealth/telepractice can enable professionals to make their services more easily accessible to clients with cochlear implants who are in poor health or live in remote areas where travel is a challenge. This course is a recorded session from the 2019 online conference “Audiology 2019: Cochlear Implants.”
Presenter(s): Doris-Eva Bamiou, MD, PhD, FRCP; Vasiliki (Vivian) Maria Iliadou, PhD; Benoît Jutras, PhD

Summary: This session will feature an international panel of speakers discussing cutting-edge issues and research in CAPD. The group will explore what practices from around the world can tell us about optimizing diagnostic evaluation of CAPD, formulating a management plan based on diagnostic evaluation findings, and managing CAPD through improved access to auditory information. The panel will focus on using evidence, client characteristics, and a multidisciplinary approach in evaluation and intervention planning. This course is a recorded session from the 2018/2019 online conference “Central Auditory Processing Disorders (CAPD).”
Presenter(s): Gail D. Chermak, PhD, CCC-A

Summary: This session will provide information to assist clinicians in making informed, evidence-based clinical decisions about CAPD assessment and intervention. For example, a considerable body of research has demonstrated the efficiency of individual central auditory tests and test batteries based on performance of individuals – including children – with confirmed CANS lesions. Similarly, there is substantial evidence that auditory training can be an effective treatment for central auditory processing deficits. This session will provide an overview of research support for existing and emerging assessment and treatment practices. This course is a recorded session from the 2018/2019 online conference “Central Auditory Processing Disorders (CAPD).”

Summary: Having knowledgeable and supported caregivers—including parents, siblings, care attendants, home aides, home nurses, and extended family—is vital to an AAC user’s success. New opportunities for virtual sessions allow a level of home involvement and support previously made difficult by time and logistical constraints. This session discusses practical strategies for teaching and supporting home caregivers. This course is a recorded session from the 2021 online conference “Expanding AAC: Accessible Strategies for Functional Communication.”
Presenter(s): William H Shapiro, AuD, CCC-A

Summary: This session discusses auditory brainstem implants (ABI) as an option for individuals who typically cannot benefit from conventional amplification or cochlear implants as they don't have an implantable cochlea or functioning 8th nerve. The session describes the ABI journey from candidacy to surgery to activation and follow-up. The speaker discusses the history of ABI, anatomy of the auditory pathway, interprofessional education and interprofessional practice related to ABI, and ABI clinical trial data.
Presenter(s): Kendrea L. (Focht) Garand, PhD, CScD, CCC-SLP, BCS-S, CBIS, CCRE
Credit(s): PDHs: 2.0, ASHA CEUs*: 0.2
Summary: This session—a recorded session from ASHA’s 2020 Health Care Connect online conference—explores the power of a comprehensive cranial nerve assessment as part of a swallow examination. The speaker discusses neuroanatomy and neurophysiology of the cranial nerves and shares a step-by-step procedure for performing a cranial nerve assessment, including identification of common abnormalities and how to document findings.
