Summary: Recent studies from the presenters’ laboratory demonstrate a relationship between electrode-to-modiolus distance and channel independence. Specifically, children and adults who use cochlear implants (CIs) (precurved electrodes) demonstrate performance gains up to 12 and 16 channels. The presenters’ working theory is that greater channel independence affords better spectrotemporal resolution. This presentation describes the relationship between spectrotemporal processing and CI outcomes for adult and pediatric CI users. This course was presented and recorded at the 2019 ASHA Convention. Summary: Neurodivergent SLPs (including those with dyslexia, ADHD, anxiety, autism, etc.) have unique insights and expertise, making them invaluable assets for fostering client-centered care within speech-language pathology practice. In this session, three neurodivergent SLPs who started their own private practices due to lack of supportive and accessible options discuss employment and supervision barriers. They share systemic and individualistic shifts to support neurodivergent SLPs.

Summary: This on demand webinar (available beginning April 27, 2024) will highlight the behaviors and characteristics typically associated with hearing loss and those typically associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children from birth to age 10. The speakers will emphasize the unique characteristics that contribute to the dual diagnosis of both ASD and hearing loss. The course will explain the impacts of social determinants of health as they relate to the diagnosis of and intervention for children with ASD and hearing loss.

Summary: This webinar will explore alternative access methods in early childhood along with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), with a focus on switch access. The speaker will discuss a total access approach assigning meaning to all communication attempts, increasing social interactions and acceptance, and presuming competence for the youngest learners. The webinar will share examples of play-based learning activities that SLPs can customize to meet a child's unique interests and passions while focusing on alternative access methods.

Summary: This course features moderated discussions among a panel of clinicians who collectively provide cochlear implant auditory rehabilitation (AR) to patients of all ages. Topics and discussions demonstrate the need to expand and differentiate intervention approaches based on the unique needs of individual patients with cochlear implants. Panelists review recent studies, present translational applications, share case studies and examples, illustrate multidisciplinary professional roles, and discuss evidence-based assessment and treatment. Summary: Despite the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 stating that people with disabilities should have access to their communities, a critical component has often been overlooked—training emergency first responders to communicate with people who have complex communication needs. In this session, two SLPs demonstrate how they have trained nearly 2,000 emergency first responders.

Summary: Cochlear implant technology has evolved over time to include sophisticated features such as accessory-based and direct streaming, remote control devices and apps, bimodal compatibility, and more – and hearing health providers must become proficient with it all. Summary: This session discusses auditory development and setting realistic expectations for outcomes for children with cochlear implants in two special, complex populations: those who receive their implants at a very young age and those who may have a secondary disability.
