Summary: Simulated presence treatment, in which an individual living with dementia watches a video or listens to audio of a familiar person (a family member or doctor), may reduce agitation and confusion and allow the individual to redirect to meaningful activities. This course – which is broken into six 5-minute blocks – will guide SLPs through using this tool to help their clients with dementia. The presenter will share examples of the tool and then walk you through creating simulated presence videos using simple technology for your own clients with dementia, including giving you time to practice and reflect.

Summary: This session provides tools for evaluating the picture books you currently use, equips you with arguments for why it is ethically important to use representative picture books and other materials, and helps you identify resources to develop a bookshelf that is aligned with your caseload composition. Summary: Concussion - or mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) - is a unique injury that is different from more severe brain injury, and addressing the associated cognitive deficits requires personalized, targeted interventions These articles discuss research and practical implications for the management of cognitive symptoms of mTBI, including defining the role of the SLP on interdisciplinary management teams, exploring specific assessment and treatment strategies, and emphasizing functional, personalized goals. The articles are from a 2021 American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology forum "Interdisciplinary Management of Concussion or Mild TBI." The articles provide evidence and strategies to increase clinician confidence and effectiveness when working with individuals with concussion or mTBI.

Summary: This session explores a situation that many school-based SLPs find themselves in: Serving students whose languages and cultures differ from their own. Summary: This course includes four recorded sessions from the 2016 online conference "Maximizing Functional Outcomes for Patients With Dementia." These sessions focus on identification and management of individuals with primary progressive aphasia, Alzheimer’s disease, other major types of dementia, and mild cognitive impairment. The conference included a total of 13 sessions, with the broad goal of describing a range of evidence-based clinical care techniques to get to the heart of patient-centered dementia care.

Summary: This journal self-study course highlights the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on people with aphasia, patients with cognitive communication impairments, and patient-provider communication. The findings can inform decision-making and assist SLPs in optimizing treatment for communication challenges for patients with COVID-19 as well as those for whom treatment has been altered as a result of the pandemic.

Summary: Comprehensive auditory rehabilitation for adults includes communication strategies, assistive listening devices, perceptual training, and supportive counseling. The problem-solving format allows an engaging and patient-centered means of addressing communication strategies and counseling needs. This presentation addresses the organization of problem-solving using the problem-solving approach (SOS); distance, angle, reverberation, and noise (DARN); and thinking, emotional response, and action (TEA).
