Summary: This recorded session from ASHA’s 2021 Schools Connect online conference explores what dyslexia is and what the SLP’s role can be in prevention, identification, and intervention. Legislation varies widely across and within U.S. states regarding roles and responsibilities when it comes to diagnosing and treating dyslexia. Summary: This course includes five recorded sessions from the 2016 online conference “Maximizing Functional Outcomes for Patients With Dementia.” These sessions focus on key components of functional assessment and treatment of dementia within the constraints of current service delivery models. Summary: This Perspectives activity focuses on the assessment and treatment of school-age students with social language deficits. Articles focus on conversational profiles for students with autism and intervention strategies appropriate for students within each profile; the benefit of using analog tasks with toddlers through adolescents to evaluate social communication abilities and guide intervention; best practices in assessing students with social communication deficits; and how effective commercially available standardized tests are for evaluating the social and pragmatic language deficits of students with social pragmatic communication disorder within and separate from autism.

Summary: This course explores an effective technique for building complex narrative language and thought. By "pressing pause," SLPs and students can take time to talk about and connect "thoughts" (mental states) to elements of story grammar such as initiating events, feelings, and plans. This process is integral for discovering intentions and motivations, perspective-taking, thinking critically, solving problems, and participating in social situations. Speakers also discuss a powerful way to teach "inference" using film "jump cuts."

Summary: Knowing when, why, and who to refer for central auditory evaluation is challenging, particularly in school settings. This session will address questions that professionals who work in schools or with young people may face: Are there “red flags" for a CAPD? What will I know after the evaluation that I don’t already know? Will results change services? Are we “overtesting/over-referring”? Are there ways to provide screening and/or intervention services that align with school-based RtI/MTSS models of intervention? How can schools screen for processing issues in ways that meet students’ needs and use resources efficiently? After screening, what’s next? Are procedures different across work settings? Summary: Despite advances in hearing technology and intervention, language, academic, and social outcomes in children with hearing loss generally lag behind those of their hearing counterparts. Providing differential diagnoses is challenging, given the cascading effects of auditory deprivation language delays. This presentation identifies commonly occurring comorbid presentations in children with hearing loss and describes the process of effectively making differential diagnoses.
