Summary: This session discusses auditory development and setting realistic expectations for outcomes for children with cochlear implants in two special, complex populations: those who receive their implants at a very young age and those who may have a secondary disability. The presenters provide a hierarchy of assessment tools that allow clinicians to assess children’s auditory skills as well as strategies clinicians can use to develop and discuss with parents realistic expectations for their children. Summary: There is evidence that many factors contribute to the varied performance outcomes among pediatric cochlear implant (CI) recipients, including etiology and quality of the electrode neuron interfaces (ENI). This course examines a study that investigated the intersection of these factors by analyzing the records and device settings for 156 children with confirmed diagnoses of either enlarged vestibular aqueduct (EVA) or Connexin-26 mutations.

Summary: This session covers a unique case of bilateral temporal bone fractures: one that spares the otic capsule yet presents with a large sensorineural component. The speaker describes the anatomy and physiology of the temporal bone to provide background information about potential structures that can be damaged in a fracture as well as explain the varying etiologies of temporal bone fractures (TBF). In addition, this session discusses possible outcomes from a TBF in relation to hearing loss and facial nerve function and potential implications for treatment, including cochlear implantation.

Summary: The negative impacts of poor literacy skills are not limited to academic coursework; they can persist into adulthood and negatively affect many elements of quality of life. This session illustrates the important role of SLPs in contributing to individualized transition plans (ITPs) for students who struggle with written language skills to ensure a successful transition to life after school. Summary: This course describes a study that utilizes a multiple baseline across behaviors design to investigate the efficacy of a caregiver training intervention to increase the use of targeted facilitative language techniques (FLTs)—strategies that caregivers use to encourage language development in their children. This study utilizes telehealth to deliver a training program for caregivers of children who are deaf or hard of hearing.
