Summary: Written expression is one of the four major modalities (along with listening comprehension, spoken expression, and reading decoding and comprehension) that SLPs need to assess when identifying language and literacy disorders among school-age children and adolescents. This session shares a framework for analyzing the variety of tasks used for written language assessment on standardized tests and considers pros and cons of each to inform decisions regarding eligibility and dismissal. Summary: Language assessment in children who are deaf or hard of hearing often focuses on language outcomes without a precise characterization of the child's language learning history. Speech-language pathologists and other early interventionists need support in ensuring that the child's cumulative experience with linguistic input (or lack thereof) is also captured. Given the cascading effects auditory deprivation and language delays may cause in children, providing differential diagnoses can present a challenge. Summary: This course describes a study that utilizes a multiple baseline across behaviors design to investigate the efficacy of a caregiver training intervention to increase the use of targeted facilitative language techniques (FLTs)—strategies that caregivers use to encourage language development in their children. Summary: Coverage of and payment for SLP services for patients with complex medical conditions requires SLPs to navigate provider guidelines and payment systems related to multiple sites of service and multiple episodes of care. SLPs must also exhibit professional mastery of the principles of clinical decision-making pertaining to a continuum of care from intensive skilled treatment to maintenance intervention and termination of SLP care. This session presents critical information to support accurate payment for SLP services provided to patients with complex medical conditions.
