Summary: Screening for dizziness and balance problems can help identify those at risk of falling and allow for interventions to prevent falls and injuries. Summary: In this session, the authors briefly review the literature on the developmental risks and auditory effects of pediatric unilateral hearing loss. Then, members of the Boston Children's Hospital's Cochlear Implant team discuss (a) the interdisciplinary evaluation process for determining candidacy for cochlear implantation, (b) the institution's aural rehabilitation protocol post-surgery, (c) specific outcome measures used to determine benefit, and (d) initial audiological outcomes for cochlear implant users with single-sided deafness.

Summary: Far too often, current learning priorities keep children and young adults focused on daily work, grades, and performance, creating a disconnect between habit mastery and the long-term needs of their future self. This session presents effective and evidence-based strategies to improve children's abilities to envision and execute goal-directed and future-focused actions. The presenter discusses strategies to strengthen future-oriented reasoning and emotional regulation during gratification postponement so students can effectively predict performance challenges, anticipate glitches, and handle mistakes while keeping in mind their future needs.

Summary: This session introduces a language intervention program for middle and high school students-Philosophy for Adolescents-that is designed to support critical thinking, narrative and expository discourse, and the use of complex syntax and literate vocabulary such as abstract nouns and metacognitive verbs. Summary: Published research indicates that outcomes in children with hearing loss are generally lower than their hearing counterparts. Given the cascading effects auditory deprivation and language delays may cause in children, providing differential diagnoses can present a challenge. This course identifies commonly occurring comorbid presentations in children with hearing loss and describes the process of making differential diagnoses.
