Summary: This course explores the most commonly fit devices for patients whose hearing is significantly poorer in one ear than the other (e.g., single-sided deafness or asymmetric hearing loss) and identify factors that impact device selection and hearing management. Summary: Conversion disorder, also commonly known as functional neurological symptom disorder, is a complex and often misunderstood condition that can affect an individual’s communication, cognition, and movement. This webinar will explore all aspects of the psychological disorder, including etiology, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, counseling, and related issues to inform the SLP’s assessment and treatment of the disorder. The speaker will also discuss the SLP’s role specifically in working with children and teens with the disorder as they complete treatment and return to school.

Summary: Children’s verbal skills differ for many different reasons. Some may have a specific deficit in learning language rules and structures; for others, the differences in expression may result from underlying limitations in memory skills, or in the cognitive control and flexibility needed to plan and monitor communication. This webinar examines how limitations in working memory and other executive functions affect language and learning generally. Summary: Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) can be life-changing for many individuals, but due to its complex and commercial nature, it also comes with a myriad of potential ethical concerns. Clinicians can improve AAC assessment and intervention outcomes for those they serve by being confident they are making ethically informed decisions about AAC use. This webinar uses case studies to discuss common ethical dilemmas encountered in the use of AAC, leaning on the ASHA Code of Ethics for support. The presenter outlines a process for ethical decision-making and shares trends in school and health care settings that affect ethical decision-making as it relates to AAC use.

Summary: Two deficits commonly caused by damage to the right hemisphere are unilateral neglect and anosognosia. Unilateral neglect is reduced attention to one region of space, and anosognosia is reduced awareness of deficits. These deficits commonly co-occur and have an impact on how well a patient participates in and responds to treatment. This webinar will discuss characteristics, assessment, and treatment of both disorders.
