Assessment for Developmental Language Disorder

Summary: This webinar will provide information to help SLPs feel more confident during the challenging process of assessing and diagnosing children with developmental language disorder (DLD). The webinar will define, compare, and contrast the features associated with various assessment tools and discuss the rationale for different assessments. The speaker will address how to select the best assessment instrument for the particular child and how to utilize information gained to inform clinical decisions. The speaker will combat common misconceptions about language assessments and provide practical, evidence-based strategies for assessment planning and interpretation. Using case studies and clinical scenarios, the presenter will demonstrate a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach that integrates data across assessments.

Summary: Motivation often declines as children reach adolescence. Poor motivation inhibits participation and engagement in language-based interventions. The purpose of this presentation is to demonstrate how intervention can be designed to increase client motivation to participate in therapy while improving language-based literacy skills. This session presents motivation and behavior change techniques based on self-determination theory. It also includes examples of how to integrate these techniques into interventions with adolescent clients to satisfy their need for autonomy, relatedness, and competence while simultaneously addressing language-based literacy deficits.

Summary: It is commonly understood that better outcomes for management and treatment of hearing loss can be linked to greater knowledge and acceptance of the condition by the patient/client/student and their families. Knowledge is power. However, often individuals and their families do not have access to an impartial site hosting a variety of resources for review. This presentation discusses the need and development of an accessible and neutral site where individuals and their families can access diverse information and a variety of literature around topics related to hearing loss. It will also cover the steps for the development of a cultural and informational center, including tips on fundraising and overall management.

Summary: TMPRSS3 is a genetic variant associated with either progressive or congenital bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. Through case studies, this on demand webinar (available beginning June 7, 2024) will address multidisciplinary management spanning from diagnosis of hearing loss to cochlear implantation. Summary: This session introduces a language intervention program for middle and high school students-Philosophy for Adolescents-that is designed to support critical thinking, narrative and expository discourse, and the use of complex syntax and literate vocabulary such as abstract nouns and metacognitive verbs. The speaker discusses and demonstrates intervention using Philosophy for Adolescents through role-playing activities that engage participants as they work through a lesson in pairs or small groups.

Summary: This session shares findings of an exploratory survey study exploring the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on communication, mental health, and quality of life (QoL) in people who stutter.
