Summary: This on demand webinar explores provision of SLP services for preschool and school-age children with mild to moderate impairment in their development as a result of early medical diagnoses and experiences such as premature birth, congenital anomalies, and chronic medical conditions. Summary: This session will examine the diagnosis and treatment of persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD). The session will explore the recently defined criteria for the presentation and symptoms of the disorder as well as describe current and emerging research that is helping clinicians and researchers better understand it. The speaker will also discuss how chronic co-morbid disorders such as migraine and Meniere’s disease should be factored into the treatment of this disorder.

Summary: This course explores the most commonly fit devices for patients whose hearing is significantly poorer in one ear than the other (e.g., single-sided deafness or asymmetric hearing loss) and identify factors that impact device selection and hearing management. Summary: This course features moderated discussions among a panel of clinicians who collectively provide cochlear implant auditory rehabilitation (AR) to patients of all ages. Topics and discussions demonstrate the need to expand and differentiate intervention approaches based on the unique needs of individual patients with cochlear implants. Panelists review recent studies, present translational applications, share case studies and examples, illustrate multidisciplinary professional roles, and discuss evidence-based assessment and treatment. Summary: This session describes how to work effectively within the constraints of school-based structures to improve outcomes for elementary school children on the autism spectrum. The speaker highlights key differences between a skills-based vs. supports-based approach to peer interaction in a school-based setting. In addition, she uses two case studies to walk through key elements of designing a supports-based approach—including goal-writing, activity selection, and strategy implementation.

Summary: Social communication involves the integration of language processing, pragmatics, and social and emotional learning, and is a challenge for children who present with developmental language disorder, autism spectrum disorder, and social communication disorder. This session presents a bibliotherapeutic intervention approach that SLPs can implement within a plan-do-review format. This practical approach utilizes brief (~15 minutes) story sharing, story enactment, and journaling activities. The speakers present preliminary efficacy data for the intervention approach as well as provide materials and resources for its implementation. Summary: Recent studies from the presenters’ laboratory demonstrate a relationship between electrode-to-modiolus distance and channel independence. Specifically, children and adults who use cochlear implants (CIs) (precurved electrodes) demonstrate performance gains up to 12 and 16 channels. The presenters’ working theory is that greater channel independence affords better spectrotemporal resolution. This presentation describes the relationship between spectrotemporal processing and CI outcomes for adult and pediatric CI users. This course was presented and recorded at the 2019 ASHA Convention.
