Summary: This on demand webinar focuses on case examples that demonstrate a language-based approach to managing echolalia, from delayed echolalia to self-generated language. Using video clips and language sample excerpts, the speakers describe the stages of gestalt language development, illustrate the varieties of echolalia, and review case examples of the successful use of the Natural Language Acquisition (NLA) protocol to support gestalt language development in three individuals. The speakers also propose transparent terminology that can be used to help explain NLA to colleagues and families.

Summary: This on demand webinar (available beginning November 21, 2020) will explore how the history of African American Language (AAL) relates to culturally sensitive and responsive practices in communication disorders. The webinar will feature first-time screenings of several excerpts from “The History of African American Language,” one episode of a documentary series sequel to the Emmy Award-winning “Talking Black in America.” During the webinar, sociolinguist Walt Wolfram and African American Language scholar and SLP Orlando Taylor will discuss the impacts of the history of African American Language on clinical practices for professionals working with individuals who speak AAL. This webinar – part of the SIGnature Series – was developed by SIG 14: Cultural and Linguistic Diversity and SIG 17: Global Issues in Communication Sciences and Related Disorders.

Summary: This webinar will discuss all aspects of echolalia, a complex and often misunderstood language phenomenon. The speaker will discuss the origins of echolalia and review the evidence that supports it as a positive indicator of language development. The speaker will describe how to perform ongoing assessment before and during mitigation, and share intervention strategies to facilitate the transition to self-generated language.

Summary: Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) can be life-changing for many individuals, but due to its complex and commercial nature, it also comes with a myriad of potential ethical concerns. Clinicians can improve AAC assessment and intervention outcomes for those they serve by being confident they are making ethically informed decisions about AAC use. This webinar uses case studies to discuss common ethical dilemmas encountered in the use of AAC, leaning on the ASHA Code of Ethics for support. The presenter outlines a process for ethical decision-making and shares trends in school and health care settings that affect ethical decision-making as it relates to AAC use.

Summary: This webinar will highlight the integration of adult learning and family-centered principles as the foundation for organizing a home visit that supports family decision-making, participation, and parent-provider partnership in early intervention. Family-guided routines-based intervention incorporates a flexible framework for home visiting that includes four components: setting the stage, observation and opportunities to embed, problem-solving and planning, and reflection and review. Within each component, SLPs can incorporate coaching strategies to support the caregiver in embedding communication intervention within the child’s everyday routines and activities.

This webinar will give SLPs the tools and processes needed to confidently make diagnostic decisions for their students and clients from diverse backgrounds. The webinar will evaluate formal assessment tools and describe effective informal assessment approaches that can help SLPs confidently tease apart difference from disorder.
