Summary: This on demand webinar (available beginning April 27, 2024) will highlight the behaviors and characteristics typically associated with hearing loss and those typically associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children from birth to age 10. The speakers will emphasize the unique characteristics that contribute to the dual diagnosis of both ASD and hearing loss. The course will explain the impacts of social determinants of health as they relate to the diagnosis of and intervention for children with ASD and hearing loss.

Summary: Published research indicates that outcomes in children with hearing loss are generally lower than their hearing counterparts. Given the cascading effects auditory deprivation and language delays may cause in children, providing differential diagnoses can present a challenge. This course identifies commonly occurring comorbid presentations in children with hearing loss and describes the process of making differential diagnoses.

Summary: This course reviews the relationship between brain health and hearing health, including the supporting research, and then dives into how expanding patient evaluations can facilitate a more holistic and patient-centered approach to patient counseling and care planning. The presenter highlights real-world data to demonstrate the value of new clinical insights available through cognitive screening.

Summary: This session analyzed the correlation between the binaural summation measured via acoustic reflex thresholds and the results of the masking level difference established for 500 Hz in 60 participants. The Pearson Correlation Analyses between the MLD values and the binaural summation revealed a significant (r= 0.277; p = 0.032) correlation when the probe stimulus was presented to the right ear and the reflex evoking clicks were presented to the left ear. Although the correlation is significant, the effect size is small, suggesting that each measure may provide information about both similar and different aspects of binaural processing and can be included in a battery of auditory processing disorders (APD) tests.

Summary: This course describes a study that utilizes a multiple baseline across behaviors design to investigate the efficacy of a caregiver training intervention to increase the use of targeted facilitative language techniques (FLTs)—strategies that caregivers use to encourage language development in their children. This study utilizes telehealth to deliver a training program for caregivers of children who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Summary: Audiologists and SLPs are critical team members who can support listening and spoken language outcomes for students who are deaf/hard of hearing (DHH). This webinar discusses auditory-verbal intervention as an approach for learners who are DHH and learning to listen and/or talk. Summary: This webinar will review the current state of hearing loss and hearing health care among individuals living with dementia, with an emphasis on addressing existing care disparities. The speaker will discuss the association between hearing loss and cognition, its impact on individuals living with dementia, and opportunities to expand access to hearing care through community-delivered approaches. Summary: This session will provide information to assist clinicians in making informed, evidence-based clinical decisions about CAPD assessment and intervention. For example, a considerable body of research has demonstrated the efficiency of individual central auditory tests and test batteries based on performance of individuals – including children – with confirmed CANS lesions. Similarly, there is substantial evidence that auditory training can be an effective treatment for central auditory processing deficits. This session will provide an overview of research support for existing and emerging assessment and treatment practices. This course is a recorded session from the 2018/2019 online conference “Central Auditory Processing Disorders (CAPD).”
