Summary: This course is one part of a four-course learning path/course set, Foundations of Effective Supervision. The webinar focuses on the impact of diversity on the supervisory relationship and the importance of cultural competence in clinical supervision. Summary: In this webinar, an audiologist and a social worker discuss how the concepts of cultural mindfulness, humility, and rigor can help clinicians evaluate their own explicit and implicit racial biases and identify practices that establish a more effective and inclusive clinical environment. The webinar explores strategies that lead to more equitable patient access and outcomes. Additionally, the presenters model and promote healthy conversations surrounding race and its influence on everyday interactions.

Summary: This journal self-study course compares language performance in children with and without cochlear implants from preschool to 6th grade. The articles examine levels of language from phonology to prosody, offering insights into areas of strength and weakness as well as clinical directions. The first article examines consonant acquisition patterns based on hearing exposure. The second and third articles compare morphosyntactic, lexical, and phonological awareness profiles, the effect of literacy on each language skill, and types of errors produced in school-age children with and without cochlear implants. The fourth article explores differences in word-learning strategies that could affect lexical development and offers clinical suggestions based on these findings. The final article explores children’s abilities to discriminate emotional intent based on suprasegmental characteristics in the speech signal.

Summary: Comprehensive management and treatment for children with CAPDs necessitates effective evaluation of co-morbidities and other related factors. Summary: The differential diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children who have a hearing loss is challenging, due in part to the lack of valid standardized assessments for this population. This webinar will explore communication characteristics of children with both ASD and hearing loss and those who are deaf/hard of hearing but do not have ASD, focusing on distinguishing attributes. Awareness of the features that are unique to ASD in the deaf/hard of hearing population will enable clinicians to more accurately identify ASD in these children and lead to earlier access to appropriate and much-needed intervention. The webinar will also highlight the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration when working with children with co-occurring hearing loss and ASD.
