Summary: Many clinicians may feel they lack the time, skills, or competence to effectively address diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI); it might feel like one more thing on an already-long list of considerations and requirements. But if we focus on our passion for working with people and change our perspective about providing culturally responsive services, then it's not more work, it is the work. This course discusses the value of addressing DEI as part of audiology and SLP services and provides practical ideas for doing so.

Summary: This session explores effective techniques and resources to help children with selective mutism (SM), an anxiety-based disorder that significantly impacts a child's ability to speak in certain contexts, make progress in school and beyond. The speaker reviews myths and facts about SM and explores the SLP's role in working with children with this disorder. Summary: Learning to gesture or use aided AAC for intentional communication with a partner is challenging for some infants and toddlers with complex communication needs. This session explores a variety of intervention strategies that improve pre-intentional and intentional communication skills using various AAC modalities and some of which incorporate families and caregivers. The speaker shares live illustrations and video examples of young children who have various difficulties with pre-intentional communication and problem solves about how intervention can structure the learner’s experiences to fill in gaps. Summary: This presentation highlights case studies exhibiting the SLP's role in assessing and treating previously healthy toddlers with disorders of consciousness in the acute rehab setting. These case studies demonstrate the opportunities and challenges of utilizing the pediatric Coma Recovery Scale when assessing these patients, the relationship between emerging oral motor skills and cognition, and treatment approaches for returning to PO intake in this population. Finally, these case studies highlight how interdisciplinary collaboration is one of the keys to success with this patient population.

Summary: Principles of motor learning (PML) are guidelines developed for the purpose of training motor execution of movement. Initially designed for training in the limbs, the methods have been adapted for use with the oral motor system.
