Summary: This course includes three recorded sessions from the 2016 online conference "Maximizing Functional Outcomes for Patients With Dementia." These sessions focus on working with all the stakeholders involved in treating patients with dementia – the individual, family members and other caregivers, and all the health care professionals involved in the person’s care. Sessions discuss caregiver counseling and support, helping patients with hearing loss, and a specific model for interdisciplinary care. The conference included a total of 13 sessions, with the broad goal of describing a range of evidence-based clinical care techniques to get to the heart of patient-centered dementia care.

Summary: Young musicians are exposed to traumatic sound levels that might increase their risk for tinnitus and noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). Music and noise are known environmental risk factors for tinnitus and NIHL. This course examines a hypothesis that genetic variants might further explain clinical heterogeneity in tinnitus and NIHL.

Summary: This course demonstrates how Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center is using telehealth applications to address the needs of children with hearing loss during the COVID-19 pandemic and into the future, including remote hearing aid evaluations, fittings, programming, repairs, and functional benefit assessments. The course is one in a set of practical programs that address specific aspects of remote practice in audiology.

Summary: Background talkers and noise negatively influence speech recognition, but far less is known about the effects of acoustic background competition on speech comprehension and memory. This course discusses experiments that indicate that background voices and noise exert a negative influence on spoken narrative comprehension and memory, even when narratives have been presented at positive signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) that ensured accurate target speech recognition.

Summary: Recent studies have implicated fatigue as an important consequence of listening effort, but the impact of fatigue on children is poorly understood. One problem is the lack of a measure of listening-related fatigue. In this presentation, the presenters (1) introduce the construct of listening-related fatigue, and (2) describe the development and validation of the Vanderbilt Fatigue Scale designed to quantify listening-related fatigue. This course was presented and recorded at the 2019 ASHA Convention.

Summary: The provision of comprehensive auditory rehabilitation services is critical to successful patient outcomes, yet many audiologists focus primarily or exclusively on amplification due to time, reimbursement, and compliance challenges. This session will clearly define the components of auditory rehabilitation and provide specific strategies and tools to help overcome challenges.

Summary: Individuals with hearing loss experience negative psychosocial consequences such as distress, depression, and loneliness. If they also experience excessive negative emotional responses (i.e., confusion, frustration, anger) or reduced positive emotional responses (i.e., happiness) compared to listeners with normal hearing, they might be unmotivated to approach communication situations. This course describes a study whose purpose was to determine the feasibility of using facial expressions to measure emotional responses.

Summary: This course reviews the relationship between brain health and hearing health, including the supporting research, and then dives into how expanding patient evaluations can facilitate a more holistic and patient-centered approach to patient counseling and care planning. Summary: In the era of COVID-19, clinicians in health care settings have faced challenges in the evaluation and treatment of a new patient population - those who have had COVID-19 - requiring us to reframe our current treatment techniques. This session focuses on reinventing the speech-language pathologist's approach to treatment of respiratory activity tolerance for motor speech. It addresses collaboration with physical and occupational therapists for incorporation of dual motor tasks with more traditional treatment. Speakers discuss goal writing and tips for tracking measurable outcomes.
