Summary: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a common and pervasive virus, and undiagnosed cases can have a range of impacts on children. Summary: Early childhood is a critical period for auditory, language, and cognitive development, and early identification of permanent hearing loss provides the opportunity for children to receive appropriate and timely intervention and educational services. When children are identified late, they are at increased risk of permanent speech, language, and educational delays. Summary: This session shares findings of an exploratory survey study exploring the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on communication, mental health, and quality of life (QoL) in people who stutter. The course discusses how the pandemic affects people with communication disorders, then shifts to discussing mental health, communication, and QoL in people who stutter and how the COVID-19 pandemic amplifies existing challenges.

Summary: Published research indicates that outcomes in children with hearing loss are generally lower than their hearing counterparts. Given the cascading effects auditory deprivation and language delays may cause in children, providing differential diagnoses can present a challenge. This course identifies commonly occurring comorbid presentations in children with hearing loss and describes the process of making differential diagnoses.

Summary: This session is a clinical tutorial that uses cases examples to integrate the practices of language sample analysis and fluency assessment. It focuses on the implementation of fluency codes in narrative retell language samples. Speakers provide information on how to identify and accurately code specific types of disfluencies within a narrative retell language sample. The tutorial provides clinicians with practical tools to use in particular narrative retell language samples to assess fluency and language production skills in bilingual and monolingual children. Summary: The session describes a case study that investigated the effectiveness of using a Comprehensive Integrated Approach to treat stuttering with a bilingual-bicultural Spanish-English adult who experienced stuttering. The case study queried whether a monolingual English-speaking clinician could effectively guide a bilingual-bicultural Spanish-English speaking adult who stuttered to transfer skills to a second language. The intervention addressed the client's bilingual-bicultural performance on measures of speech fluency, strategy use, reactions to stuttering, problem-solving, and quality of life.

Summary: In this SIG 4 activity, authors describe ways to (a) increase speech-language pathologists’ comfort with treating stuttering by providing a structured grouping of activities centered around using education, ease, and empowerment (Gore & Margulis); (b) continue using empirical evidence and clinical experience to make informed decisions about assessment procedures for young children who stutter (Singer & Kelly); and (c) provide holistic speech-language therapy services for stuttering using telehealth (McGill & Schroth). Each of these articles provides practicing clinicians ways to gain confidence in their abilities to provide evaluations and treatment across delivery paradigms.
