ASHA Learning Pass

The session describes a case study that investigated the effectiveness of using a Comprehensive Integrated Approach to treat stuttering with a bilingual-bicultural Spanish-English adult who experienced stuttering. After 6 months of successful progress, and in anticipation of spending 2 months with her family in Honduras, the client expanded her treatment plan to include modification, transfer, and problem-solving targets in both Spanish and English. The subsequent treatment plan addressed Modification and Transfer Phase activities in both languages. The case study queried whether a monolingual English-speaking clinician could effectively guide a bilingual-bicultural Spanish-English speaking adult who stuttered to transfer skills to a second language. The intervention addressed the client’s bilingual-bicultural performance on measures of speech fluency, strategy use, reactions to stuttering, problem-solving, and quality of life.

Presenter Information

Jessica L. Fanning, PhD, CCC-SLP (Presenting Author), is a Clinical Associate Professor in the University of Oregon Communication Disorders and Sciences program. Areas of clinical specialization include fluency disorders, ASD, and caregiver training. Current research interests include integrated research-to-practice graduate training in fluency disorders, cross-age models of intervention support groups for stuttering, and Integrated Approaches to treating Fluency Disorders across the life span.
