Summary: This on demand webinar will provide guidelines for dismissal from stuttering treatment to create a safety net for children who stutter. Summary: Conversion disorder, also commonly known as functional neurological symptom disorder, is a complex and often misunderstood condition that can affect an individual’s communication, cognition, and movement. This webinar will explore all aspects of the psychological disorder, including etiology, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, counseling, and related issues to inform the SLP’s assessment and treatment of the disorder. The speaker will also discuss the SLP’s role specifically in working with children and teens with the disorder as they complete treatment and return to school.

Summary: Children’s verbal skills differ for many different reasons. Some may have a specific deficit in learning language rules and structures; for others, the differences in expression may result from underlying limitations in memory skills, or in the cognitive control and flexibility needed to plan and monitor communication. Summary: Evaluating and treating children with selective mutism (SM) presents challenges. These children have the ability to speak but may not do so in social situations where they feel uncomfortable and are expected to speak. A substantial number of children with SM have speech-language deficits and vocal tension, affecting their ability to vocalize and verbalize. To determine a child’s actual communication abilities and plan appropriate treatment, it is important to conduct a comprehensive evaluation with expressive output. This webinar describes a validated evaluation procedure and treatment methods to improve vocal output, enhance meaningful verbalizations, and expand language in individuals with SM.

Summary: The differential diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children who have a hearing loss is challenging, due in part to the lack of valid standardized assessments for this population. This webinar will explore communication characteristics of children with both ASD and hearing loss and those who are deaf/hard of hearing but do not have ASD, focusing on distinguishing attributes. Awareness of the features that are unique to ASD in the deaf/hard of hearing population will enable clinicians to more accurately identify ASD in these children and lead to earlier access to appropriate and much-needed intervention. The webinar will also highlight the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration when working with children with co-occurring hearing loss and ASD.
