Summary: The differential diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children who have a hearing loss is challenging, due in part to the lack of valid standardized assessments for this population. This webinar will explore communication characteristics of children with both ASD and hearing loss and those who are deaf/hard of hearing but do not have ASD, focusing on distinguishing attributes. Awareness of the features that are unique to ASD in the deaf/hard of hearing population will enable clinicians to more accurately identify ASD in these children and lead to earlier access to appropriate and much-needed intervention. The webinar will also highlight the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration when working with children with co-occurring hearing loss and ASD.

Summary: Students who are deaf or hard of hearing are a diverse population of individuals who may use various languages, communication modalities, and technologies. Often, SLPs do not have in-depth training to confidently work with these students. Summary: Principles of motor learning (PML) are guidelines developed for the purpose of training motor execution of movement. Initially designed for training in the limbs, the methods have been adapted for use with the oral motor system. This course reviews how PML can be employed in training protocols targeting speech production.

Summary: Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a complex sensory-motor speech disorder that typically requires both intensive individualized intervention and systematic opportunities for generalization and carryover. CAS also has significant academic and functional impacts, especially on participation, language, and literacy.
