Summary: This session explores treatment targets and evidence-based practices to improve language and literacy outcomes for school-age children who are Deaf or hard of hearing. Summary: Self-directed speech, or self-talk, can support preschool and school-age children's executive functioning, but this type of non-social speech is often delayed in children with communication disorders. This session explores the link between self-directed speech and executive functioning and describes strategies SLPs can use to facilitate the use of self-directed speech during intervention to support executive functioning and reduce challenging behaviors.

Summary: Far too often, current learning priorities keep children and young adults focused on daily work, grades, and performance, creating a disconnect between habit mastery and the long-term needs of their future self. This session presents effective and evidence-based strategies to improve children's abilities to envision and execute goal-directed and future-focused actions. The presenter discusses strategies to strengthen future-oriented reasoning and emotional regulation during gratification postponement so students can effectively predict performance challenges, anticipate glitches, and handle mistakes while keeping in mind their future needs.

The course will explain the impacts of social determinants of health as they relate to the diagnosis of and intervention for children with ASD and hearing loss.
