Summary: This session describes a research investigation of speech recognition in quiet and noise in thousands of patients with varying degrees of hearing loss. Based on the data, the speaker provides clinical recommendations in which speech recognition in noise can become the default test of speech perception in routine audiologic assessment, and word recognition in quiet is only performed when it is likely to be suboptimal.

Summary: Geriatric care provides both unique opportunities and challenges for speech-language pathologists. SLPs working in geriatric settings often face ethical dilemmas associated with various aspects of clinical care, including the decision-making process, patient preferences and respecting patient rights, care planning, end-of-life situations, provision of services, and other issues. This panel discussion addresses the issues faced by SLPs in their daily practice and shares knowledge and resources to address these challenges.

Summary: This session describes the value of interprofessional practice (IPP) on a pediatric FEES (flexible [or fiberoptic] endoscopic evaluation of swallowing) team. Summary: Motivation often declines as children reach adolescence. Poor motivation inhibits participation and engagement in language-based interventions. The purpose of this presentation is to demonstrate how intervention can be designed to increase client motivation to participate in therapy while improving language-based literacy skills. This session presents motivation and behavior change techniques based on self-determination theory. It also includes examples of how to integrate these techniques into interventions with adolescent clients to satisfy their need for autonomy, relatedness, and competence while simultaneously addressing language-based literacy deficits.

Summary: It is commonly understood that better outcomes for management and treatment of hearing loss can be linked to greater knowledge and acceptance of the condition by the patient/client/student and their family. This presentation discusses the need and development of an accessible and neutral site where individuals and their families can access diverse information and a variety of literature around topics related to hearing loss. It will also cover the steps for the development of a cultural and informational center, including tips on fundraising and overall management.
