Summary: This session presents a study of 19 children ages 5-7 with inaccurate /r/ who were followed every 3 months until they acquired /r/ or turned 8 years old, whichever came first. Acquisition was determined for three separate allophones of /r/: vocalic, prevocalic, and postvocalic.

Summary: Speech sound disorders (SSDs) exist along a spectrum of severity and abilities, with many involving both the motoric and the phonological system. As a result, many children with SSDs experience related issues with the phonological skills needed for word reading and spelling. This session reviews the Simple Views of Reading and of Writing and connects those theories to assessment practices. The speaker discusses ideas for adapting speech sound intervention activities to include phonological awareness, decoding, and spelling.

Summary: The differential diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children who have a hearing loss is challenging, due in part to the lack of valid standardized assessments for this population. This webinar will explore communication characteristics of children with both ASD and hearing loss and those who are deaf/hard of hearing but do not have ASD, focusing on distinguishing attributes. Awareness of the features that are unique to ASD in the deaf/hard of hearing population will enable clinicians to more accurately identify ASD in these children and lead to earlier access to appropriate and much-needed intervention. The webinar will also highlight the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration when working with children with co-occurring hearing loss and ASD.

Summary: This on demand webinar (available beginning November 20, 2020) will address interprofessional collaboration between SLPs and Board-Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) when assessing and implementing augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Focusing on a case study where collaboration improved outcomes for a young child who uses AAC, the speaker will address terminology and language frameworks used by each field, highlight the perspective of each discipline, and share practical strategies for facilitating collaboration. Participants will walk away with a handout with conversation starters and question prompts SLPs can use to facilitate discussions about AAC with BCBAs. This webinar – part of the SIGnature Series – was developed by SIG 12: Augmentative and Alternative Communication.
