Summary: SLPs’ work with patients with complex medical conditions and their families, and the focus is often on the initial or acute stages of conditions that affect eating, drinking, and swallowing. This session addresses how SLPs can ensure best practice in the longer-term. The speaker addresses the importance of understanding how a patient’s dysphagia fits into the bigger medical and quality-of-life picture, backed by bioethical considerations and evidence. The session discusses how SLPs are not just one cog in a complex, interprofessional machine, but often the linchpin for optimal care of the patient and their family.

Summary: There is a high prevalence of brain injury among youth and adults in the criminal justice system. The cognitive-communication impairments associated with brain injury can be a risk factor for both justice involvement and recidivism as well as barrier to successful community reintegration. This session focuses on the emerging role of SLPs with this underserved population, which may include assessment and intervention but may also include advocacy as well as training and education of front-line staff and justice professionals.

Summary: This presentation highlights case studies exhibiting the SLP's role in assessing and treating previously healthy toddlers with disorders of consciousness in the acute rehab setting. These case studies demonstrate the opportunities and challenges of utilizing the pediatric Coma Recovery Scale when assessing these patients, the relationship between emerging oral motor skills and cognition, and treatment approaches for returning to PO intake in this population. Finally, these case studies highlight how interdisciplinary collaboration is one of the keys to success with this patient population.

Summary: In this course, three SLPs share their perspectives on working with multilingual students and overcoming challenges and barriers to equitable and effective augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) interventions. The course explores practical strategies, tools, and templates to help SLPs engage students and families, support multiple languages in AAC devices for students who are speaking or nonspeaking, and advocate for affirming practices that center the whole child.

Summary: The typically unplanned journey through the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) provides infants and their families with an early experience with interprofessional practice. This session reviews common reasons for an infant’s admission into the NICU, describes the interprofessional team caring for these infants, and discusses the role of SLPs as communication and feeding specialists in the NICU. The speaker examines neonatal abstinence syndrome, its cause, and the latest treatment strategies and outcomes. Finally, the speaker touches on the importance of support and post-discharge care for these patients.

Summary: Modifying diet consistencies is one of the more common approaches to dysphagia care. However, much controversy remains regarding how SLPs tackle decision-making and about the actual modification and measurement of liquids and foods in terms of nutrition and safety as primary goals of dysphagia treatment. This session addresses the complexities in both processes, with a focus on achieving the best outcomes for each patient.

Summary: This session introduces technological, procedural, and analysis factors that optimize objectivity and reproducibility of clinically valid videofluoroscopic measurements made from modified barium swallow (MBS) studies.
