Summary: TMPRSS3 is a genetic variant associated with either progressive or congenital bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. Summary: Audiologists and SLPs encounter individuals of all ages with varying degrees of hearing loss, many of whom utilize or could benefit from cochlear implants (CI). CI technology has evolved drastically over the past 40 years. Summary: The session describes a case study that investigated the effectiveness of using a Comprehensive Integrated Approach to treat stuttering with a bilingual-bicultural Spanish-English adult who experienced stuttering. The case study queried whether a monolingual English-speaking clinician could effectively guide a bilingual-bicultural Spanish-English speaking adult who stuttered to transfer skills to a second language. The intervention addressed the client's bilingual-bicultural performance on measures of speech fluency, strategy use, reactions to stuttering, problem-solving, and quality of life.

Summary: In this SIG 10 activity, authors explore holistic admissions in CSD programs. Carmichael, Mandulak, and Watkins provide a tutorial for incorporating interviews during the admissions process. Scheer-Cohen, Heisler, and Moineau outline an approach to holistic admissions that includes a video response to a question, an informal group interview, a live lecture with an assessment, a simulation, content quiz, a writing prompt, and an individual live interview. Reisfeld and Kaplan provide a systemic review of admission measures that may be used to predict graduate students’ clinical skills. Finally, Newkirk-Turner and Hudson explore the dangers of unconscious bias in letters of recommendation for graduate admissions.

Summary: This session discusses a project that established a cross-sector national consortium of self-advocates with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), family advocates, community providers, and health care professionals. The consortium guides and evaluates an environmental scan and literature review on best practices in educating health care professional students in the care of persons with IDD, including health care professional students addressing communication disorders.

Summary: An increasingly diverse United States means that clinicians are encountering more languages in hospital settings. SLPs and audiologists have a legal and ethical responsibility to ensure language access—that is, to actively bridge communication challenges between clinicians and patients/families who do not speak, understand, read, or write in the same language. This session discusses language access law and solutions for situations in which a trained medical interpreter is unavailable.
