Summary: Medicare beneficiaries are an important patient population to consider when developing a business model, and SLPs in private practice need to know how to enroll in and bill Medicare to ensure they are compliant with federal law. This course walks through the basics of Medicare credentialing, coding and billing, and documentation to ensure successful processing of claims and medical records that will stand up to scrutiny if audited.

Summary: Audiologists in clinics and private practices who bill Medicare have needed an order from a physician to provide hearing assessment services since the inception of the program. However, for 2023, Medicare removed the physician's order requirement in a way that has the potential to improve access to care for Medicare beneficiaries but also includes some limitations. Summary: This session covers a unique case of bilateral temporal bone fractures: one that spares the otic capsule yet presents with a large sensorineural component. The speaker describes the anatomy and physiology of the temporal bone to provide background information about potential structures that can be damaged in a fracture as well as explain the varying etiologies of temporal bone fractures (TBF). In addition, this session discusses possible outcomes from a TBF in relation to hearing loss and facial nerve function and potential implications for treatment, including cochlear implantation.

Summary: There is evidence that many factors contribute to the varied performance outcomes among pediatric cochlear implant (CI) recipients, including etiology and quality of the electrode neuron interfaces (ENI). This course examines a study that investigated the intersection of these factors by analyzing the records and device settings for 156 children with confirmed diagnoses of either enlarged vestibular aqueduct (EVA) or Connexin-26 mutations.

Summary: Coverage of and payment for SLP services for patients with complex medical conditions requires SLPs to navigate provider guidelines and payment systems related to multiple sites of service and multiple episodes of care. SLPs must also exhibit professional mastery of the principles of clinical decision-making pertaining to a continuum of care from intensive skilled treatment to maintenance intervention and termination of SLP care. This session presents critical information to support accurate payment for SLP services provided to patients with complex medical conditions.
