Summary: As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, students, SLPs, and educational specialists faced unprecedented challenges and stressors related to learning and service delivery procedures. This session shares results from a study that explored resilience among high school students with language learning disabilities during the transition to online instruction as a result of the pandemic.

Summary: Communication and community are tightly connected, but audiologists don't often know how to apply our knowledge and skills to large populations of people. Audiologists can apply public health concepts to promote healthy hearing for people from all walks of life. This course discusses the field’s roots in public health, core concepts of public health (assessment, policy, and assurance), hearing health disparities, and ways to apply these concepts to support healthy communication in our own communities.

Summary: Fingerspelling is prominent among educated deaf and culturally Deaf adults who use American Sign Language (ASL). Research suggests that d/Deaf signers use the same cognitive processes in "reading" fingerspelling that they use in reading print. This session reports comparative measures of speechreading across three tests of varied difficulty in 44 d/Deaf adults who also took a pseudo-word fingerspelling test presented with and without mouth movements. Presenters translate findings to encourage clinical research and practical application for audiologists and speech-language pathologists working with hard-of-hearing and deaf adults. Summary: This session addresses the diagnosis of pediatric vestibular and balance disorders. Particular focus is paid to the most common audiological testing accommodations for pediatric patients suffering from dizziness and imbalance as well as the etiologies of such disorders seen in the pediatric population.

Summary: Many older adults experience a growing number of comorbidities and functional limitations as they age. An individual’s ability and willingness to access hearing care is influenced not only by the severity of his or her hearing loss but also by other health, socioeconomic, and environmental factors. This session discusses recent research on patient outcomes as well as reviews lessons learned from a human factors approach to hearing care for older adults, including addressing common comorbid conditions.

Summary: While remote service delivery has been around for several years, eAudiology (also known as teleaudiology) is becoming a daily reality for many audiologists, in large part due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This course discusses how eAudiology addresses the need for improving patient experience, providing innovative services, and increasing clinic efficiency. The speakers highlight how the recent advances in hearing aid remote programming fit with eAudiology, strategies for introducing eAudiology services to patients who can benefit from them, and how to best utilize eAudiology during and post-pandemic. Summary: The field of audiology focuses mostly on the peripheral auditory system-in both diagnosis and management-but other factors (e.g., "hidden hearing loss" and/or reduced cognitive ability) may play a role in an individual's ability to communicate in diverse environments. This session discusses how audiologists can incorporate evoked potential testing into the assessment battery to obtain a more comprehensive picture of auditory function.
