Summary: Clinical care in the intensive care unit (ICU) is exceptionally dynamic; patients may present differently day to day, or even hour by hour, and so their lab values and medication needs may fluctuate often. SLPs need to remain extraordinarily aware of changes in these lab values and medications to inform their ongoing assessment and treatment. This course examines classes of medications and lab values, their effects on a patient's presentation, and how they may influence SLP assessment and treatment as well as interprofessional decision-making.

Summary: Even before the COVID-19 pandemic required clinicians to rapidly adapt their practice for remote service provision, researchers were already exploring effective telehealth approaches for audiology. Summary: Hundreds of medications commonly prescribed for anticancer treatments and some infections are known to cause auditory and/or vestibular dysfunction, known as ototoxicity. This course discusses early detection of ototoxicity through increased awareness, leveraging current tools, and clinical practice approaches for serial monitoring, all of which can provide care teams opportunities to identify adverse effects, modify treatment plans to mitigate hearing loss, and utilize individualized interventions. The speaker discusses strategies for preventing or minimizing cochlear damage to preserve quality of life for patients receiving treatment and to reduce the societal burden of hearing loss.

Summary: SLPs often work with individuals in palliative care to improve their functional abilities related to dysphagia as well as communication, but the SLP’s role in end-of-life processes is more challenging to define. This session explores the unique and rewarding role of the SLP in palliative care and end-of-life processes and describes how SLPs can provide support for swallowing and communication across the continuum of care and with a variety of populations.

Summary: Loss of effective communication can occur across the spectrum of critical illness and recovery, particularly with the use of artificial airways, including endotracheal and tracheostomy tubes. Patients report ongoing, long-term impacts to their psychosocial well-being and quality of life due to their lack of ability to communicate immediate care and comfort needs as well as participate in activities with a variety of communication partners.
