Summary: Under ideal conditions, children with hearing loss receive services from both a clinical audiologist and an educational audiologist to support their unique needs. Summary: Diet texture modification-specifically, thickening of liquid consistencies-is often recommended to compensate for dysphagia in pediatric populations due to their physical and cognitive immaturity. This session discusses the evidence in support of this popular management recommendation and explores the many variables that can impact its effectiveness. The speaker presents strategies that SLPs can implement in their clinical practice to mitigate undesirable consequences of texture modification in the pediatric population.

Summary: Medically complex neonates often face many challenges as they learn to feed and along the path of transitioning from tube to oral feedings. One of the most perplexing is how to progress oral feedings while the infant is still receiving positive pressure support for respiratory needs. Summary: In this session, the authors briefly review the literature on the developmental risks and auditory effects of pediatric unilateral hearing loss. Then, members of the Boston Children's Hospital's Cochlear Implant team discuss (a) the interdisciplinary evaluation process for determining candidacy for cochlear implantation, (b) the institution's aural rehabilitation protocol post-surgery, (c) specific outcome measures used to determine benefit, and (d) initial audiological outcomes for cochlear implant users with single-sided deafness.
