Description:

This course is an opportunity to ask questions to the five presenters from the on-demand course Dynamic Duo: SLP-SLPA Collaboration for Ethical Supervision and Efficient Practice. Presenters will answer your questions on strategies that SLPs and SLPAs can use to build collaborative, efficient, and ethically grounded partnerships for school-based practice. Have questions on scope of practice, practical documentation systems, communication, strategies for mentorship/professional growth, or another aspect of SLP-SLPA collaboration? This is your chance to get answers from SLPs and SLPAs who work together in schools.

Learning Outcomes
You will be able to:

  • Summarize at least two new ideas, strategies, and/or perspectives you gained from the discussion
  • Describe at least one insight from the discussion that you can share with others in your school

Presenter Information

Christina Kittock is a speech-language pathology assistant (SLPA) dedicated to supporting students with diverse communication needs and passionate about fostering positive communication development in young learners. Kittock received a degree from Alexandria Technical & Community College in Alexandria, Minnesota, and currently works for the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted (HLWW) school district in Waverly, Minnesota, servicing preschool through 4th grade. As an SLPA, Kittock is skilled in implementing therapy under the supervision of an SLP, conducting Early Childhood Screenings, collaborating with families to promote communication progress, and helping children learn self-advocacy skills to achieve their goals. Kittock brings a background of 20+ years of experience working as a paraprofessional in the special education setting, including working with students who are on the autism spectrum, medically fragile children, those with behavioral challenges, and those who need academic support. Outside of work, Kittock enjoys traveling and spending time with family: a husband, two children, and one granddaughter. Kittock also likes reading.

Faith Smith, MS, CCC-SLP (she/her/hers) is the Lead SLP for the Roundtree Group and has been a part of the company since 2019. She provides supervision for SLPAs within the pre-K through high school school setting. She also provides direct supports within the area of supervision to the team within the school/academic setting, which is how she has been able to gain information and overall knowledge about the area of supervision.

Darla Mackedanz, MS, CCC-SLP (she/her/hers) is a certified speech-language pathologist with a passion for empowering individuals to find their voice and celebrate the beauty of communication. She earned a bachelor's degree from Iowa State University and a master’s degree from the University of Minnesota-Mankato. She currently works at Howard-Lake-Waverly-Winsted School district in Waverly, Minnesota, serving preschool through 4th grade. Her work has focused on providing interventions, assessments, and treatment for a diverse range of populations. Mackedanz has worked extensively with school-age students in the areas of speech sound production, receptive and expressive language, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), social/pragmatic communication, and fluency. She is dedicated to supporting students in gaining the skills needed to be successful in their education. She caters to the individual needs of her students, incorporating lightheartedness into her work because laughter and fun significantly enhance learning by fostering a positive environment, which in turn, helps students achieve their speech and language goals. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her husband. Together, they have two children and are proud grandparents of two granddaughters. Mackedanz enjoys exploring all that Minnesota has to offer and researching her family's ancestry, which has turned into a bit of a passion project over the years.

Jerrold Jackson, MA, CCC-SLP (he/him/his) is CEO of the Roundtree Group, PLLC and an advocate for culturally responsive practices, with a range of professional experiences. He engages in programmatic/leadership development in academic and clinical settings as well as implementation science related to supervision, interprofessional collaboration, and cultural responsiveness. The foundation for such knowledge and skills derived in part from roles as an assistive technologist, practicing speech-language scientist, special education director, graduate program clinical coordinator, and graduate program academic coordinator. He received a bachelor’s degree from Southern University (SU) and A&M College (an HBCU) and a master’s degree from Western Michigan University (WMU), both degrees in Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences (SLHS). He also continues to support the professional development of future speech-language-hearing scientists as adjunct faculty at three institutions across the U.S. Mr. Jackson is an active professional volunteer with ASHA, NBASLH, and the Praxis National Advisory Committee for SLP – all of which have led to advancements in SLHS. In 2022, Mr. Jackson received the Dorothy Dreyer Award for Volunteerism and served as the 2024 ASHA Convention Co-chair for SLP.

Symphony Boyd, BS (she/her/hers) is a speech-language pathology assistant (SLPA) at Roundtree Group, where she has been working in the school setting for the past 3 years. Before becoming an SLPA, she worked as a Registered Behavioral Technician, which shaped her approach to supporting students with behavioral and communication needs.
