Summary: Health care providers' attitudes toward and skills communicating with people with communication disabilities may affect patients' health care outcomes. Summary: This session discusses a study of college students with and without developmental language disorder (DLD), who were compared on measures of how they plan for writing; how they revise their writing; and measures of length, complexity, and error production in handwritten and typed expository writing samples. Results suggest that typing provides longer samples and similar measures of errors and complexity compared to handwritten samples.

Summary: Policymakers are pressing health care providers to track-and therefore get paid according to-patient outcomes. At the same time, patients are savvier and demanding more accountability from providers. This session explores how audiologists can incorporate patient function and outcomes data in clinical decision-making and patient counseling in order to stay relevant as the primary provider of hearing health care services.

Summary: This session addresses fully engaging the patient and decision-makers in the process of informed consent around diet consistency modification, particularly in the SNF setting. Presenters discuss relating the results of instrumental assessment of swallowing to the structure and function of the swallowing mechanism, allowing for critical thinking about risks and benefits of all the possible diet consistencies as one component of the overall plan of treatment for dysphagia.

Summary: It is unclear how over-the-counter hearing devices will impact our patients and our practices in the coming years. This session will discuss practical strategies for incorporating OTC devices, deciding when to offer alternative rehabilitation options to patients, and offering a wider variety of solutions to meet our patients’ needs.
