Summary: As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, students, SLPs, and educational specialists faced unprecedented challenges and stressors related to learning and service delivery procedures. This session shares results from a study that explored resilience among high school students with language learning disabilities during the transition to online instruction as a result of the pandemic.

Summary: Loss of effective communication can occur across the spectrum of critical illness and recovery, particularly with the use of artificial airways, including endotracheal and tracheostomy tubes. Patients report ongoing, long-term impacts to their psychosocial well-being and quality of life due to their lack of ability to communicate immediate care and comfort needs as well as participate in activities with a variety of communication partners. This session focuses on identifying, measuring, and supporting a patient's psychosocial well-being and quality of life as it relates to communication function.

Summary: This session addresses rehab considerations for SLPs working with adult patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). Speakers discuss an overview of oxygen delivery methods, optimizing communication and dysphagia intervention for ICU patients, progressing patients with tracheostomy to successful decannulation, and maximizing outcomes for patients with complex medical conditions through multidisciplinary communication and collaboration.

Summary: This session describes how to work effectively within the constraints of school-based structures to improve outcomes for elementary school children on the autism spectrum. The speaker highlights key differences between a skills-based vs. supports-based approach to peer interaction in a school-based setting. Summary: This session discusses a project that established a cross-sector national consortium of self-advocates with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), family advocates, community providers, and health care professionals. The consortium guides and evaluates an environmental scan and literature review on best practices in educating health care professional students in the care of persons with IDD, including health care professional students addressing communication disorders.

Summary: This course explores factors that contribute to health inequities for individuals who report a hearing loss. Individuals with hearing loss report miscommunication, inaccessible health information, reduced awareness by health care providers, and low patient satisfaction while struggling with inadequate health literacy. The course discusses ideas for rethinking and redesigning our health care, through the guidance of innovative clinics and programs, to address these inequities and care for these individuals effectively.

Summary: Many clinicians may feel they lack the time, skills, or competence to effectively address diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI); it might feel like one more thing on an already-long list of considerations and requirements. But if we focus on our passion for working with people and change our perspective about providing culturally responsive services, then it's not more work, it is the work. This course discusses the value of addressing DEI as part of audiology and SLP services and provides practical ideas for doing so.

Summary: The business aspects of health care delivery and resultant SLP experiences, such as increased productivity requirements and disparities in patient access, may feel unfair. The paradoxical experience of providing patient-centered care and maximizing patient outcomes while wrestling with workload demands and economic pressures can affect SLPs’ independent clinical judgement, contributions to patient care, and value added.
