Summary: SLPs who work with middle and high schoolers with social communication challenges have much to consider. How do I make sure my practice is being culturally responsive? How do I assist with online learning formats? How do I make sure I'm implementing warranted, functional goals that respect students’ identities – and that take into account the social, emotional, and physical changes that occur during adolescence? Drawing from research, clinical, and first-person perspectives, this on demand webinar presents considerations, strategies, and sample case studies to help SLPs modernize their approaches for working with students with social communication challenges in middle and high school.

Summary: Written expression is one of the four major modalities (along with listening comprehension, spoken expression, and reading decoding and comprehension) that SLPs need to assess when identifying language and literacy disorders among school-age children and adolescents. This session shares a framework for analyzing the variety of tasks used for written language assessment on standardized tests and considers pros and cons of each to inform decisions regarding eligibility and dismissal. The session includes opportunities to practice applying a multilevel language analysis system to written language samples of students with varied profiles. Summary: Cultural competence can be defined as the knowledge and skills a provider requires in order to meet the social, cultural, and linguistic needs of clients, patients, and/or students while providing impactful services. This micro course explores questions like, "What are ways I can obtain information about the cultural traditions, preferences, and experiences of a client, patient, or student?" and "How can I partner with them to gain this essential information?"

Summary: SLPs often operate from a deficits perspective due to the practical need to focus on assessment and qualification for services. In this course – which is broken into six 5-minute blocks – the presenter will demonstrate how to focus on students’ communicative strengths in order to build rapport with students and foster positive, collaborative relationships with other stakeholders. Then the presenter will guide you through actionable steps to practice using a series of checklists to identify a student’s strengths and reflect on the results.
