Summary: In an ever-changing global landscape, it is pertinent that audiologists and speech-language pathologists “account for the complexity and diversity of healthcare contexts” (as stated in the second article by Pillay and Pillay). Pressing concerns related to advancing technology (artificial intelligence and machine learning), culturally responsive practice, and rapid climate change are all trending societal conversations. This SIG 17 self-study explores creative solutions to pressing global issues that impact the field of audiology and speech-language pathology. Topics presented include key ethical concerns regarding hearing aids with machine learning, a novel culturally responsive framework for contextualized clinical reasoning, and the impact of climate change on communication and swallowing disorders.

Summary: Each adult with dysphagia presents with unique characteristics, each setting provides different challenges, and each treatment team functions in different ways. Therefore, in addition to possessing core knowledge, SLPs need to consider all related factors and apply critical-thinking skills to meet the needs of each patient. Summary: SLPs are charged with doing more with less time. This session from ASHA's 2021 Schools Connect online conference shares a way to address caseload and time challenges. The workload calculator is a tool that can be used to critically analyze an SLP's caseload. Summary: Each year, parents and educators download hundreds of millions of educational apps. However, there is limited research on the efficacy of these apps. This course covers how school-based SLPs are incorporating these apps in their intervention sessions as well as the need for a tool to critically evaluate apps used in educational settings.

Summary: The session describes a case study that investigated the effectiveness of using a Comprehensive Integrated Approach to treat stuttering with a bilingual-bicultural Spanish-English adult who experienced stuttering. The case study queried whether a monolingual English-speaking clinician could effectively guide a bilingual-bicultural Spanish-English speaking adult who stuttered to transfer skills to a second language. The intervention addressed the client's bilingual-bicultural performance on measures of speech fluency, strategy use, reactions to stuttering, problem-solving, and quality of life.

Summary: It is commonly understood that better outcomes for management and treatment of hearing loss can be linked to greater knowledge and acceptance of the condition by the patient/client/student and their family. This presentation discusses the need and development of an accessible and neutral site where individuals and their families can access diverse information and a variety of literature around topics related to hearing loss. It will also cover the steps for the development of a cultural and informational center, including tips on fundraising and overall management.

Summary: SLPs have noted the diagnostic challenge of distinguishing between the clinical indicators of language disorder, language delay based on the impacts of being reared in poverty, and the linguistic variation of students who speak African American English (AAE).
