Summary: Health care providers' attitudes toward and skills communicating with people with communication disabilities may affect patients' health care outcomes. This session presents research that suggests providers are aware of these inequities but lack skills and confidence to address them. The session explores how training and other initiatives are needed to help providers better care for patients with communication disabilities.

Summary: This presentation discusses how faculty members can incorporate inclusive teaching methods to promote increased accessibility for a range of students with diverse learning needs. Presenters describe the main tenets of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and ways that instructors can reflect on their teaching practices to incorporate elements of UDL into their courses through incremental pedagogical changes.

Summary: The experience of trauma or re-traumatization during a person's rehab stay can result in physical, psychological, and emotional health conditions, and can also impede therapeutic rapport, the patient's feelings of safety, and the overall healing and recovery process. This course examines trauma-informed care and its relevancy within SLP practice and discusses ways to implement practical methods of providing trauma-informed care in a health care setting.

Summary: This course describes the various ways that a head and neck cancer diagnosis can impact mental health, and ways to identify when a patient may need to seek professional help from a mental health specialist. The speaker highlights how a speech-language pathologist can assist in the detection of a potential mental health disorder through use of mental health screenings and head-and-neck-specific quality-of-life measures, and discusses considerations for addressing mental health and effectively navigating challenges that may impede success during treatment and/or rehabilitation.

Summary: This course describes a study that includes findings from semi-structured interviews with people with Parkinson's disease (PD) and their family members (based in Oklahoma, Texas, and Arkansas) about their current unmet needs and barriers to service delivery. In addition, the course discusses some of the future directions and avenues that may benefit the PD community.

Summary: This session is a case study that focuses on patients and families with diagnosed hearing loss and additional disabilities who participated in aural habilitation/rehabilitation and speech/language intervention focusing on development of listening and spoken language skills with support of alternative and augmentative communication (AAC).

Summary: There is a high prevalence of brain injury among youth and adults in the criminal justice system. The cognitive-communication impairments associated with brain injury can be a risk factor for both justice involvement and recidivism as well as barrier to successful community reintegration. This session focuses on the emerging role of SLPs with this underserved population, which may include assessment and intervention but may also include advocacy as well as training and education of front-line staff and justice professionals.

Summary: A better understanding is needed of the barriers and facilitators in accessing communication services by gender diverse individuals. This session describes a conceptual model of health care access and shows its use in developing a group solution to improve gender expansive individuals' access of communication services.

Summary: Despite the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 stating that people with disabilities should have access to their communities, a critical component has often been overlooked—training emergency first responders to communicate with people who have complex communication needs. In this session, two SLPs demonstrate how they have trained nearly 2,000 emergency first responders.

Summary: This presentation addresses the underlying neuropathology of ataxia, dysarthria-specific assessment and treatment for degenerative ataxias, and the importance of cognitive assessment and treatment. The presenter highlights recent advances in intervention, including noninvasive brain stimulation.
