Access to Gender-Affirming Voice & Communication Services: A Group Therapy Solution (PD102499)
A better understanding is needed of the barriers and facilitators in accessing communication services by gender diverse individuals. This session describes a conceptual model of health care access and shows its use in developing a group solution to improve gender expansive individuals’ access of communication services.
This course is a recorded technical session from the 2021 ASHA Convention Virtual Library (session 4027V).

- Identify barriers and facilitators to accessing voice and communication services by gender expansive individuals
- Describe five dimensions of health care access as they relate to accessing gender-affirming services by gender expansive individuals
- Name at least two solutions that improve access to gender-affirming voice and communication services

Presenter Information
Jennifer Gill, MS, CCC-SLP (Presenting Author), is co-director of the Wellness Group for Voice, Speech, and Swallowing, singing specialist, and mezzo-soprano. She received her MS in Speech-Language Pathology from Pacific University, Graduate Opera Performance Diploma from Indiana University, and a Bachelor of Science in Music, Voice Performance from Portland State University. Her clinical interests include vocal injury prevention and treatment and gender-affirming voice and communication.

Aaron Ziegler, PhD, CCC-SLP (Non-Presenting Author), is Director and Speech-Language Pathologist at The Wellness Group for Voice, Speech, and Swallowing, a group practice serving the U.S. West Coast and Idaho. His clinical interests include vocal aging, vocal injury prevention, and gender-expansive voice and communication. Dr. Ziegler has published research, funded in part through the National Institutes of Health, on models of voice therapy and prevention including Phonation Resistance Training Exercises (PhoRTE).
