ASHA Learning Pass

This course presents a systematic review that aimed to answer the PICO-format clinical research question: For adults with cochlear implants and severe to profound postlingual sensorineural hearing loss, is auditory training effective in improving listening outcomes? A systematic search of five databases identified 331 articles published between January 2010 and November 2019. Ten studies met the inclusion criteria and were reviewed by three of the four authors. The 10 studies that met the review criteria comprised two randomized control trials, one quasi-experimental case control study, and seven pre/post case series. The majority of studies represented low or very low levels of evidence. This review highlights the need for further research to examine auditory training benefits for adults with cochlear implants.

Presenter Information

Georgia Cambridge (Presenting Author) graduated from the University of Queensland as an audiologist in 2010. Georgia has worked at Hear and Say as a cochlear implant audiologist for several years, interspersed with a number of years working at independent hearing aid clinics. Georgia's current role as Manager of Hear and Say's Adult Hearing Rehabilitation Program is focused on expanding services and improving outcomes for adults with hearing loss.

Tracey Taylor (Presenting Author) is a certified practicing speech-language pathologist and certified Auditory-Verbal Therapist. Tracey obtained an honors degree in Speech and Hearing Therapy from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 2009 before moving to Australia in 2016 and joining Hear and Say. Tracey is a Team Leader in the Listening and Spoken Language team and has a special interest in supporting children and adults with their auditory learning post-cochlear implantation.

Dr. Wendy Arnott (Non-Presenting Author) is a speech-language pathologist and academic. Her research interests include adopting a psycholinguistic approach to examine language development and disorders and clinical research into the impact of hearing loss on language and communication.

Dr. Wayne Wilson, PhD, MAudSA, CCP (Non-Presenting Author), is an Associate Professor and the Head of Audiology at The University of Queensland (UQ), Australia. His main research interests have been auditory processing and auditory evoked potentials, on which he has published more than 100 scientific papers, given more than 275 presentations at scientific conferences, and secured more than 35 competitive research grants. Wayne’s research has been cited in white papers and national guidelines internationally.
