The Impact of Hearing Loss on Language and Literacy (WEBS0120127)

Course Description


This Perspectives forum focuses on the reading outcomes of students with hearing loss and cochlear implants. The first article examines the role of vocabulary on print knowledge for students with hearing loss. The second article provides recommendations for treating the listening and spoken language skills of students with hearing loss based on the results of a 2-year study. The third article compares how reading ability and working memory are impacted in students with cochlear implants and hearing aids after they participated in a computer-based program. The final article explores the relationship between language and reading ability in students with hearing impairment.

Learning Outcomes
You will be able to:

  • compare the relationship between conceptual print knowledge and alphabet knowledge
  • explain the best-practice recommendations for teaching vocabulary and concept words to children with hearing loss
  • describe the importance of reading fluency in reading development as it compares to the strengths and challenges of the reading achievement of children with hearing loss
  • describe the results and benefits of a computer-based phonics program on reading ability in students with cochlear implants and hearing aids
  • define the challenges that children with hearing loss experience with oral and written language and the intervention principles that will support literacy acquisition for these children
