Adolescent Language: Reading and Writing (WEB18020)
This course explores working with adolescents with and without language impairments on written language; the writing process; vocabulary development; and breaking down complex language in texts.
The course includes three recorded sessions from the 2018 online conference “Spoken and Written Language in Adolescents: Fresh Solutions.” The conference included a total of 14 sessions, with the broad goal of presenting practical, holistic strategies to address the communication and emotional well-being of adolescents. Conference sessions focused on targeted approaches to treat adolescents with various language and literacy challenges at different severity levels—from mild to severe.
The three sessions in this course bundle are:
- Using Writing to Enhance Critical Thinking and Language, by Nickola W. Nelson, PhD, CCC-SLP, BCS-CL (75 minutes)
- Sentence-Level Difficulties in Secondary Reading and Writing, by Cheryl Scott, PhD, CCC-SLP (101 minutes)
- Vocabulary Learning in Adolescent English Learners With Language Disorders, by Linda I. Rosa-Lugo, EdD, CCC-SLP (65 minutes)
Learning Outcomes
You will be able to:
- describe how to target critical thinking in the context of teaching students to plan compare-contrast or pro-and-con essays
- summarize several treatment objectives and procedures for improving complex language skills in older children and adolescents
- implement collaborative techniques with English language teachers and general education classroom teachers to address vocabulary
