In this panel discussion, an audiologist and a speech-language pathologist share how they are currently using competencies in their practices to enhance client, patient, and student care. The panelists also discuss the drivers for implementing competencies at their workplaces, their colleagues’ responses to the shift to using competencies, and the benefits they have experienced at the individual and organization level.

This is the last of four courses in the Career Pathways: Exploring Competency Frameworks series.

Presenter Information

Terri Hinkley, EdD, MBA, BScN, RN, CAE, is the CEO of the National Association of School Nurses, a 501(c)(3) organization based in the Washington, DC, area. She has over 10 years of association management experience, having held executive positions in both individual membership associations and certification boards. She has over 28 years of acute care nursing experience and spent 20 years in the pharmaceutical industry overseeing clinical trials. Terri is currently the Immediate Past President of the American Board of Nursing Specialties (ABNS) and is Chair of the Board of Directors for the Institute of Credentialing Excellence (ICE), and the Otsuka Patient Assistance Fund. She received her RN from Centennial College, BScN from York University, an Executive MBA from Athabasca University, and an EdD in the Executive Leadership (ELP) Human and Organizational Learning (HOL) Program from George Washington University. She is enrolled in a graduate program in Strategic Foresight at the University of Houston.

Amanda Wildman, MS, CCC-SLP, is an ASHA-certified speech-language pathologist, working at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and as an adjunct professor at New York University. She received her BA in Hearing and Speech Sciences from the University of Maryland and an MS in Communicative Sciences and Disorders from New York University. She specializes in pediatric dysphagia and outpatient feeding and swallowing management. Amanda works on a variety of multidisciplinary teams involving medically complex children and fragile infants. Her current role within the Center for Childhood Communication involves the development and implementation of competency frameworks for clinical specialty areas.

Julie Martinez Verhoff, AuD, PhD, CCC-A, is a pediatric audiologist and the Audiology Manager at Nemours Children’s Health in the Delaware Valley. She grew up in Grants, New Mexico, and attended the New Mexico Military Institute before earning her BS degree from the University of New Mexico. Dr. Verhoff holds an AuD from the University of Texas at Dallas and a PhD from Gallaudet University. In her current role, Dr. Verhoff overseas all clinical audiology protocols and competencies and serves as the clinical education coordinator for the Audiology Department, collaborating with various universities to offer learning experiences for students. Her previous positions include Director of Audiology at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and River School, Research Audiologist at Gallaudet University and House Ear Institute, and Adjunct Professor at several universities. Dr. Verhoff is passionate about community engagement, public policy, and volunteering with organizations that support children with hearing differences. She has traveled to Vietnam, Mongolia, Nepal, and Africa to assist with program development and knowledge sharing. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, and watching Korean dramas with her Boston Terrier.
