Clinical Case Review: CAPD Evaluation Results in Patients with Documented Central Auditory Nervous System Lesions (PD103058)

Presenter(s): Jennifer E Gonzalez, AuD, PhD, CCC-A
Course Description

This session presents a brief overview of central auditory processing skills, assessment procedures, and results interpretation, followed by a review of multiple clinical cases of adult patients evaluated for central auditory processing disorder (CAPD)/deficits at Mayo Clinic in Arizona. The presenter focuses specific attention on connecting each patient’s documented site-of-lesion with presenting auditory symptoms and CAPD evaluation results. Cases include sites-of-lesion along the length of the central auditory nervous system (CANS), including the intra-axial brainstem, extra-axial posterior fossa, and cerebrum, with sources including neoplasm and infarction. Cases include individuals with comorbid bilateral sensorineural hearing loss for whom the onset of central auditory processing dysfunction hindered their success with binaural amplification.

This session was recorded at the 2023 ASHA Convention in Boston (session 1909).
